SPEEDS

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)

  • The most scalable solution, currently allowing future upgrades to 1000Mbps.

  • Net Pricing can be very reasonable

  • Not affected by weather

  • Will allow a business to host other services for customers

  • Symmetric connection

  • Will make other options available such as VoIP telephones.

  • Subject to large excess construction charges of up to £100,000

  • 60-90 day lead time following site survey

  • Long contractual commitments, usually 5yrs

Poor

10Mbps – 1000Mbps downstream and upstream (symmetrical connection).

Bonded ADSL/FTTC

  • Bonded ADSL can provide even the most rural areas with fast broadband

  • Bonded FTTC can be used as a low cost alternative to FTTP, providing very large connections up to 400Mbps

  • Provides a layer of redundancy

  • Maximum of 13 X ADSL/FTTC lines can be bonded, limiting future upgrades

  • Can be on a long lead time (up to 45 days)

Excellent

Maximum of 400Mbps downstream and upstream.

Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC)

  • Can provide broadband speeds via standard BT telephone outlets

  • Short lead time (upto 45 days)

  • Increasingly available in UK towns and cities

  • Not available in many rural areas in the UK

  • Asymmetrical connection, meaning that some of the poorer FTTC connections have low upload speeds

Around 61% UK coverage.

Maximum of 80Mbps downstream and 20Mbps upstream

Satellite Broadband

  • Fantastic download speed, up to 20Mbps

  • Available in almost any UK location

  • Short lead time (up to 30 days)

  • Easy installation

  • High latency rate, making the solution unsuitable for real time hosted applications

  • Affected by poor weather

  • Unlimited data packages are subject to a fair usage policy which if exceeded will see bandwidth limited for a period of time, making it less suitable for business with multiple staff using Internet

Good

Up to 20Mbps downstream and 6Mbps upstream.

ADSL

  • Available at every UK address

  • Short lead time (14 days)

  • Low cost

  • Easy Installation

  • Very poor available speeds, particularly in rural areas

  • Asymmetrical connection, meaning that some of the poorer ADSL connections have extremely poor upstream speeds.

Maximum of 20Mbps downstream and 1.5Mbps upstream.

Guaranteed

Ethernet First Mile

  • Can often be connected more quickly if installed over copper

  • Completely dedicated service meaning bandwidth is all yours

  • Does not utilise existing lines or hardware, needs installing by BT

Around 80% UK coverage

Up to 20Mbps
